Event description

This exhibition brings together 2 artists Barry Andrews, contemporary oil painter and Gemma Smale, ceramic artist to explore the relationship between our environment, materials and time. The work focuses on the natural world work shaped by natural forces both physically and observing the studying the changing environment of the world around us.

Gemma Smale’s work studies surface effects from wood firing kilns, the atmospheric firings the impacts of the kiln across the surface of her vessels. The length of time to fire these kilns evolves and changes the surface of her work, she highlights the study of flame paths across large wheel thrown vessels.

Barry Andrews work similarly observes atmospheres within landscape along the Thames Estuary, the colours mood and environment respond to tide and weather. His surfaces layered with subtle surface variation to reflect rhythm and stillness of the landscape.
